In case of a sudden change in cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will drop down from the compartment above your seat. Pull the mask toward you and oxygen will begin flowing. Place the mask over your nose and mouth (breath deeply) and take the elastic band and place it around your head. PUT ON YOUR OWN MASK FIRST, BEFORE ASSISTING OTHERS.

It is great when something as common-place as the pre-flight announcement can have a spiritual meaning. We often experience a “sudden change in pressure.” As a Pema Chodron said in a recent talk, you know when you are truly on the path when such a change from the outside or the inside reminds you to begin your practice.

The final line of the announcement reminds us that we first must practice for ourselves before helping others. Without loving kindness and compassion for ourselves we will not find the equanimity to love others without reservation.
